Lego Mindstorms (1998) is a creative robotic toolkit made of Lego augmented with motors, sensors and other electronics. The Lego Mindstorms Robot Inventor kit enables you to build a five different robotic models with interactive and challenge elements. It’s stood the test of time for being a unique way to get into robotics, programming and design without the usual barrier of complexity.
Play involves working through the instructions to build complex robots that not only move but respond to your presence and different prompts in the environment like colour and barriers. Once you’ve built a robot you then use the free app to “program” how it behaves.
Both the building and programming is very approachable. You are walked through each stage with instructional videos and debugging assistance. The programming is with simple dragging and dropping in a Scratch-like environment. After completing the builds you can take on different activities, like teaching robots behaviour or extended builds.
The kit provides all you need to create the following basic robots, before making your own creations:
You can use PlayStation and Xbox controllers to control and interact with the robots. Alternatively you can build a controller on your Smartphone so you can interact via the touch screen.

- MVP: Is a customisable rover robot with attachments for dune, race, turret and brick eater modes.
- Gelo: Quadroped creature that uses colour and distance sensor to navigate the environment.
