Ōkami (2006) (Okamiden on Nintendo DS) is an unusual action-adventure. Combat is via interactions that are achieved with brush strokes rather than weapons. It has a unique visual style that invites you to inhabit its painted world with brushstrokes of your own. Whether in combat or bringing new life to the flora and fauna, Okami is an epic saga built around a unique location that needs to be painted back to the multicoloured world it once was. Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Ōkami 5 years ago. It was re-examined by Thom Robertson and updated 4 weeks ago.
Rated PEGI 12 for Bad Language and Violence. Violence consists of using a paintbrush as a sword to attack enemies. Enemies will flash red when hit. You can paint living things to revive them, but also to destroy them. Offensive language consists of “Hell” and “Damn”.
9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. You need the skill and inquisitiveness to investigate the 3D world. Encounters with enemies require some precise motions and movements to trigger attacks, but also good observation to identify how best to take on an enemy.
