Play Overview
Once Again (2022) is a narrative game where you uncover a story about endings and goodbyes through photography. While other visual novels offer a branching story, here the focus is on triggering events with novel interactions like developing photos and taking pictures. It stands out for offering a story about memory and loss that unfolds at the pace you are comfortable with.
You play by flipping through virtual pages and reading the story before being given a simple action to complete to progress. For example, putting a picture into focus, choosing a roll of film for a photograph, or developing a picture in a dark room. These actions are not meant to be complicated, instead adding satisfying interactivity to the story.
As you progress, you piece together more of what happened, who "she" is, and what the future may bring. The game never gets difficult, instead enabling you to become emotionally invested in the story as it develops without worrying about tricky gameplay.
This results in a tender and contemplative game about enjoying the time you have with loved ones, as well as learning to say goodbye.
