Play Overview
Paleo Pines (2023) is a simulation adventure where you befriend dinosaurs to help you fix your ranch and farm crops. Play involves exploring the island, meeting the locals, taking on quests and working towards taming the dinos. It stands out not only for the dinosaur befriending but how it offers a rich world of stories and characters to discover.
You arrive on the island with Lucky, your childhood dinosaur friend. You soon realise that the other dinos are missing and set about finding them. As you explore the island you start to make a home for yourself by collecting, trading, crafting and farming. Guiding you through this is a detailed journal that acts as a repository of history and information as well as tracking your progress.
The dinosaur hunting and befriending offers a nice distraction from the familiar grind of homemaking. They move around and some are harder to find than others, or may appear only under special conditions, so you need to spend time exploring the island at different times of day. Getting to know the geography can help, as can talking to the locals who offer tips on how to find and catch each dino.
In this way, you work towards developing your ranch and collecting your pack of dinosaurs. Once you've found one you need to carefully befriend them by mimicking their calls with your flute and feeding them a tasty treat. As your ranch grows, you’ll soon have a dino haven for all your new friends.
This results in a game rich in things to do. The home-steading and community-helping aspects feed nicely into the main event of taming dinos which in turn helps you develop your home more easily. It's a lovely playful loop with a world full of distractions and fun things to discover.
