Video Game Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo Review
Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo (2023) is a horror narrative game about a seemingly unconnected group of people in a suburb of Tokyo caught up in an ancient rite of resurrection. You search for clues and talk to characters all the while trying to enact a murder to fulfil the unique requirements of each curse to be able to resurrect someone in your own life. It's unusual for its dark challenge and how the seven characters (and curses) intertwine to make ensuring they all survive increasingly complex.

Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo is a horror narrative game about a seemingly unconnected group of people in a suburb of Tokyo caught up in an ancient rite of resurrection. You search for clues and talk to characters all the while trying to enact a murder to fulfil the unique requirements of each curse to be able to resurrect someone in your own life. It's unusual for its dark challenge and how the seven characters (and curses) intertwine to make ensuring they all survive increasingly complex.

In the Japanese city of Showa, you play three main characters: Harue Shigima, a grieving mother who's working with a detective to find the truth about her son's disappearance; Tetsuo Tsutsumi, a senior police officer working with a new hire to investigate an officer's death; and Yakko Sakazaki, a high school student recovering from her friend's supposed suicide. Each finds a mysterious Curse Stone, which can resurrect one person if the owners of the other eight stones are killed and their lives are flung together as they race to uncover its mysteries.

Play involves exploring each location for clues, talking to people you meet, and making choices for the three protagonists. At key decision points the story branches into one of several possible paths, some of which lead to disaster, requiring you to go back and figure out how to prevent it. Unusually, the best solution often requires real-world research and knowledge the characters may themselves not possess. This leads to you being able to make decisions for one character to nudge another character's story in the right direction. You can even change specific game settings to alter the story itself.

The result is a unique visual novel that makes you think outside the box for unusual and inventive solutions. Discovering the twists and turns the dark story takes as you influence its unfolding, is both satisfying and hugely engaging.
