Peridot is a pet simulation game from the makers of Pokémon Go. Rather than training and fighting your pet, here the focus is on digital care, teaching tricks and taking it with you on walks. It stands out for the Augmented Reality interactions and clever systems of traits and archetypes that drive the breeding and behaviour of your pets - although to really get the most out of this most players find they need to spend money on the in-game purchases.

You start by hatching a new Peridot that presents you with a squishy-looking animal. The game uses your smartphone camera so you can see the creature in the room you are in. This is how you view and interact with your new friend. Play then involves using the touchscreen to stroke, feed and gently raise your new hatchling. As you progress there is a drive to collect many Peridots to unlock Traits and Archetypes. These offer a hierarchy of behaviour and appearance of your next pets. To be able to do this after your first pet you need to spend money on the in-game purchases.

The game uses its Augmented Reality technology to enable your pet to interact with objects in the real world. It can see the terrain and furniture and will forage around to discover hidden items in the virtual world. There are some games to play, like throwing a ball to send your creature scurrying to collect it, but generally, this is a game about hanging out with a cute animal.

The result is a simple experience that offers depth through the quality of interactions and character development as much as the gameplay. There are some aspects that let you show off and breed your creature, but essentially this is like Nintendogs or Anki's Cozmo character.
