Play OverviewPlay Overview

Reigns: Beyond (2020) is the next game in the Reigns series that puts you in charge of making important decisions. Rather than running a kingdom, this time you are in an intergalactic indie rock band trying to gain stardom and fame.

In the game, you play local (and not-so-local) club venues from all over the fantasy galaxy. As you go you can recruit different alien band members, manage your ship's resources and keep an eye on your crew. You do this by making simple decisions and swiping left or right. Each decision has implications for these different elements you need to balance.

As you progress you can unlock legendary Galactic Guitars, Fight pirates and overzealous tax collectors. You can hang out on your ship to practice with the band. You can offer directions to lost space travellers. In fact, there are over sixty characters to meet.

It’s a good first role-playing game because it boils things down to simple decisions while raising themes about the complexity of society and music. There are a few games in the series:
  • Reigns: Her Majesty extends the game to a new kingdom with power in a woman’s hands. New characters and a fresh story are a chance to consider patriarchy itself with additional pressures to balance like "being criticised for having too many wrinkles" or “gossiping too much.”
  • Reigns: Game of Thrones draws on the popular TV series and books for characters and plot. If you’re a fan of the series, this can be a good game to start with.
  • Reigns: Beyond: Takes the decision making into space. You don't have an empire but must build one for your rock band.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Reigns: Beyond 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 4 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Likely to be rated PEGI 7 and EVERYONE 10+ like previous Reigns games.

Rated 12+ on Apple App Store for Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence, Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. It's tempting to see this as a game for the very young. Although youngsters can cope with the swiping mechanic, the weighing of these decisions and management of resources take some skill. Also, to get to grips with the different characters and the wider narrative requires some joined up thinking.
