Play OverviewPlay Overview

Summerhouse (2024) is a creative game where you design little vignettes by constructing buildings by dragging and dropping doors, windows, roofs and other paraphernalia. Play is about design rather than success or failure, but it still offers surprising outcomes - particularly for players who wouldn't consider themselves creative.

The developer was inspired by their love of little summertime houses. You place modular building blocks in a grid system to construct beautiful little dwellings and neighbourhoods. Play is about having fun and enjoying being creative, as the developer puts it, "you can’t win or lose it and you can’t be bad at it".

As you progress you learn how different placements and configurations create different styles of houses. The controls are designed to work regardless of design skill and keep things super simple. There are hundreds of building blocks to experiment with.

The result is a game that's as much about creating a vibe as it is about any particular outcome. Getting into the flow of tinkering with the little houses is matched by the resulting buildings that exude calm tranquillity.

Our examiner, Jo Robertson, first checked Summerhouse 14 months ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 9 months ago.
