Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (1999) is a light-hearted cartoon-style brawling game where multiple players choose well-known video game characters to fight. Play involves using your character's move-set to outwit and beat your opponents. You wear down their energy to be able to hit them off the stage and gain points. It stands out for the exuberant fighting that focuses on skill and timing more than gore and injury.

It looks like a cartoony kid's game, but each character takes time and practice to learn. They all have different attacks and ways to move around. This can mean that those with more experience do better in family battles, but there's always a chance for everyone to win.

A big part of the appeal is the lighthearted fun, along with the huge range of characters drawn from other video games including Super Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, Yoshi and Pokemon.

The result is a skill-based fighting game that is also welcoming to newcomers. You can jump in for a fun match or spend many hours learning and perfecting the best tactics to win at esports events.

Rated PEGI 12 for frequent mild violence. 2D arcade-style fighting game. Violence consists of kicks, punches and the use of some weapons. There is no blood or visible injury. The character's reactions to the violence are over-exaggerated with bright flashes and smoke effects on impact. Players can square off in direct hand-to-hand combat battles using human-like characters.
 
Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief, Suggestive Themes. Players punch, kick, and perform super-attacks (e.g., giant laser blasts, rocket barrages) against cartoony opponents to knock them off platforms; a handful of characters also use swords, blasters, mallets, and firearms while fighting. Battles can be frenetic at times, with screen-shaking effects and large explosions. During the course of the game, players can unlock 2D character art that depicts female characters in revealing outfits (e.g., short skirts, deep cleavage, low-cut tops). One character emits flatulence gas clouds to attack opponents.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The nature of the characters included in the game makes this popular with young children. To play competitively you need to have good control of sticks and buttons and be able to react quickly. You also need to be able to move strategically and team up with other players.
