Play Overview
Thronefall (2023) is a miniature strategy game that focuses on tactics without the usual headaches of ever-expanding scale. You play in a fantasy world and build your defences during the day to be ready to defend yourself at night. It stands out not only for the diminutive (they really are tiny) armies but for stripping a strategy game back to its core.
It's a game that simplifies the classic strategy genre, but then offers a branching web of upgrades and advancements to discover. It aims to have complexity only when it needs it and it serves the player. Play works in two phases. During the day you place buildings, walls and defensive towers so that when night falls you are ready to defend yourself from the flow of enemy units.
As you progress you learn to balance what you spend and what you need. Do you need more archers, thicker walls or an additional mill to generate more money? Will you keep the enemies at bay with your longbow or charge your horse right into them?
The result is an approachable strategy game that looks like a Knights and Castles toy box. What starts as a super simple challenge soon grows both in complexity and challenge. The number of upgrades and ways to find efficient defences make it a game that's good to play again and again.
