Play OverviewPlay Overview

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (2002) is a simple and silly running, jumping and exploration game from the early 2000s. You play Ty as he searches for eggs to power a machine that will locate five scattered talismans and free his family. It's unusual for offering a collect-a-thon challenge, with minimal clutter and Wallace-and-Gromit-looking characters.

Play involves exploring the 3D levels to find the eggs and access the Talisman Machine to progress to the next zone. This requires you to run and jump around to reach different areas. You can attack enemies with his bite or dual boomerangs. As you progress you can upgrade your boomerangs to be more effective and useful.

Each level is cleared by collecting a certain number of eggs and getting to the end of the path. Once you have enough eggs you must find the Talisman Machine and defeat a series of boss enemies that then grant you access to a new zone.

There are four games in the series:
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue (2004) - Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan (2005) - Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 (2015) PC

The Ty the Tasmanian Tiger games are unusual for their exploration and battling play which made 3D platform games popular in the early 2000s. It's simpler than more recent games and focuses on fun and quirky characters rather than polish. The remastered versions upgrade visuals and bring them to modern consoles.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 3 for occasional very mild violence in a comical or abstract context. Gameplay features cartoon-like violence that’s similar to the violence found in most 3D Mario games. It’s always directed at fantasy characters and mostly seen from afar. The violence itself is unrealistic and over-the-top, including the use of boomerangs as well as 'bite attacks'. Reactions to violence are similarly unrealistic. Characters flash when hit, often with comic reactions and with no visible harm. When defeated, enemies vanish in puffs of smoke. The cartoon-like visual style helps to make the violence less disturbing.

Some of the animal characters in the game can be unsettling for kids. Spiders, sharks and big eels which are pretty intimidating.

Skill Level

9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Younger children often take to the characters in the game, although do need some co-ordination and perseverance to find all the eggs. One family told us their children loved it and were "inspired me to want to paint the characters? And spent hours exploring the world."
