Play Overview
Farewell North (2024) is an adventure where you play a collie dog who restores colour to a desolate Scottish island. You explore with your owner who you help by uncovering hidden paths, evading monsters, and freeing wildlife. It stands out for the fluid canine exploration and relationship with your owner in a story about overcoming obstacles and saying farewell.
You head into the wilds of the Scottish countryside with your owner as they look for peace about the troubling loss in their life. At your own pace, you run through lush grass, hike up steep cliffs and canoe the ocean between islands. Play is part exploration and part helper puzzles where you work to help your owner find a way forward.
As you progress you get more of a glimpse into the life of the characters and discover the events in the past which have led them to the archipelago. It's a metaphorical game where colour and the absence of colour create two different realities. Something the gameplay leans into as well as the aesthetics.
The result is a game about overcoming depression and saying farewell. As is common, it's a narrative communicated by your journey and interactions as much as the visual metaphors. Here, the interaction between owner and companion offers an intimacy that softens proceedings and carries you forward. Along the way, you get to discover monsters, creatures and wildlife inspired by the rich history of Scottish folklore.
