Play OverviewPlay Overview

New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) is a platform game where you play with 4 main players (and an optional assistant player) to traverse from one side of the level to the other. Along with the usual running, jumping, stomping and collecting you are racing other players to get the most coins. You can play as a range of Mario characters but can also select your Mii avatar to play in the game for the first time too.

There are additional assistance options in this game. The Super Guide detects if you are stuck and offers to control your character to avoid anyone getting stuck.

There was an alternate version of the game called New Super Luigi U with additional features. There is also Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Switch that contains both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. It runs at higher resolution and includes a new playable character, Toadette. It also lets you edit your own levels.

This is an Action and Platform game with Collecting, Creative, Puzzle and Traversal elements. You can play with 1 to 5 players in the same room, but you can’t play it online. On Wii U the game is played with Wii Remotes, Pro Controller or the Wii U GamePad. A big novelty is how a fifth player can play a helping role. With four main players use Wii Remotes, this extra player uses the Wii U gamepad screen to add platforms and stun enemies.

On the Switch version you use Joy-Con controllers (half each) but can't access the assistance player mode of the Wii U, so this version is 4 players.

5+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Although you do need some timed button pressing skill for jumps and running, because you can hop into a bubble if you are stuck this is a game that still works with really young players. Playing in a group lets you progress together, with more experienced players aiding younger players. Players can bump into each other which can be fun if you enjoy mischief or mistakes, but also can frustrate if one player gets bumped to their death.
