Video Game Please Knock On My Door Review
Please Knock on My Door (2017) is a narrative puzzle about someone suffering from depression and social anxiety. By making choices you help them get through work and reach out to friends. But more than the mechanics of self-care, the game engages with the desperation and frailty of these themes. It's unusual in offering a better understanding of what it's like to live with mental health issues.

Please Knock on My Door is a narrative puzzle about someone suffering from depression and social anxiety. By making choices you help them get through work and reach out to friends. But more than the mechanics of self-care, the game engages with the desperation and frailty of these themes. It's unusual in offering a better understanding of what it's like to live with mental health issues.

Play involves moving around the different inside and outside spaces to interact with the world. You direct the character to make choices about the day. Maybe you'll send them back to bed, or maybe to use the computer. As you progress your choices have an impact on your wellbeing. You can also make dialogue choices that impact your perspective on the world.

As you explore and make choices, you hear the inner voice of your character. This fully voiced narration adds weight and nuance to the themes that arise. This is backed by a somber soundtrack that has been tailor-made for the game.

In this way you work to bottle up, share or care for your various mental challenges. There's no Game Over screen, only alternate endings with different relationships surviving or failing, that tie into your choices.

This game has not yet been rated, but we anticipate it is likely to be rated PEGI 12.

The developer describes the game as an experience "that might be difficult to play for those who have dealt with psychological issues such as depression and anxiety. That said, I truly believe that through entertainment we are able to understand topics that would otherwise be too foreign for us. I hope this game can help you better understand what it can be like to live with these issues, like it has already helped me."
