Play OverviewPlay Overview

Rough Justice: '84 (2023) is a chance-based strategy game where you manage a private investigation firm. Like a traditional tabletop board game with cards and dice, you direct your agents to take on jobs, make vital judgement calls and complete a variety of logic-based puzzles to earn money and keep your business thriving. It's a unique blend of board-and-video game mechanics that puts your carefully-weighted actions and decisions at the forefront.

You play former detective James Baylor who, in 1984, is set-up by the American Nazi Party for a crime he didn't commit. After being bailed out of jail by a mysterious organisation hunting Nazi war criminals, you set-up a detective agency under their watchful eye. You hire agents and determine their proficiency in five critical skills with a series of dice rolls, then send them out on hired jobs across the city, making key decisions about how to complete them.

The outcomes of interactions between your agents and the people they meet are also determined by chance; dice are rolled and compared against the value of the agent's proficiency in the corresponding skill. To complete some jobs, you must complete reaction time, maths, and logic puzzles.

As you complete jobs you earn money to expand the agency with more agents, upgrade their skills and tools, and buy items that offer strategic advantages. You can also buy cards, which give your agents temporary upgrades to their skills and abilities.

The result is a complex game that feels a lot like a classic D&D game. You get to know your agents intimately, upgrading and honing them to the task in hand. This enables you to make the right deploys for each job, taking into account skills and proficiencies they're likely to need. It's a game that offers considerable personal control and rewards well-thought-out strategies and patience, along with persistence and calculated risk-taking.
