Resident Evil Village is a survival horror adventure. It follows on the narrative of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the first person perspective. As in the other games, you play Ethan Winters who is searching for his kidnapped daughter in a village filled with mutant creatures. With a combination of suspense, puzzles and action, the game creates a tense horror experience.

You can select difficulty, as well as individual assists for aiming.

Sound is an atmospheric and important aspect of the game; sometimes you need to hear enemies so you can avoid them, and all sounds, including environmental noises, can be included in the captions by selecting the appropriate settings from the menu. You can control the sound effects and music independently.

You can enable captions from the accessibility menu, and can also change the size, colour, and background opacity to make them large and high in contrast. Because of these captions, the game can be played without sound. Text in menus, however, cannot be adjusted and is fairly small and low in contrast.

You can access a map during play, once you have collected it. This displays the areas you have explored and points of interest like items and doors. Sometimes you need to distinguish objects by colour alone, which is important to note for colourblind players.

You can disable screen shake via the Camera Wobble setting. You can also slow down camera movement to aid motion sickness.

The game makes use of the PlayStation 5 adaptive triggers and this can be disabled. You can select between a toggle or hold for running.
