Text is all high in contrast but can be small, although subtitles are just above 1/20th of screen height and high in contrast. There's minimal voice acting. The game can be very dark at parts, and there are flashing lights (lightning bolts) in cutscenes and occasional screen shake.
The in-game map shows which doors are locked and which ones you have keys to, as well as any ghosts present in the room you're in and whether you've got all the treasure hidden there.
Some of the sound effects can be very useful, especially in knowing when a ghost appears or has been sucked up, so sound is helpful when playing the game, even if not strictly necessary.
