Play OverviewPlay Overview

Luigi's Mansion (2001) is an adventure game where you investigate a haunted mansion to capture the ghosts. As long-standing Nintendo character Luigi, you play a ghostbuster to capture various mischievous ghouls and rescue Mario. It stands out for the unusual spooky premise combined with beautiful intricate environments and brain-teasing puzzles.

You play Luigi who, after winning a mansion from an unknown source, sets off to meet up with Mario and investigate. However, when you arrive, Mario is nowhere to be found, and you enter the mansion only to find it riddled with ghosts and spooky apparitions. With the help of a friendly scientist, you hunt down all the ghosts, collect treasure, and rescue Mario from his supernatural prison.

Play involves exploring the mansion's many rooms, defeating ghosts, and finding keys and secrets to advance. You use your flashlight to stun ghosts and the Poltergust 3000, a modified vacuum cleaner, to suck them up and defeat them. At the end of the game, you get a new mansion built for you, the size of which depends on how much treasure you find.

The result is a game that's spooky yet never too scary, with Ghostbusters-style action and quirky characters. Combined with exploring the richly detailed environments filled with secrets and treasures, it makes for a novel experience.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for non-realistic violence in a child-friendly setting or context, violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures. The game contains pictures or sounds likely to be scary to younger children. The player has to navigate in dark hallways and ghosts suddenly appear, objects move without being touched and thunder and lightning suddenly brighten up the room, making shadows appear. The game also contains very mild violence in a childlike setting, like ghosts being sucked up in a vacuum cleaner or Luigi getting punched when a ghost draws near.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE for Mild Cartoon Violence. Players use a vacuum to capture ghosts and manipulate objects that move between rooms. Ghosts struggle when captured, and a handful of ghosts shoot projectiles (e.g., fireballs) at Luigi. Boss battles occur on rare occasion and can involve tossing exploding balls at enemies.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Younger children need to learn to be methodical in their exploration. Persevering when stuck is also important.
