Oxygen Not Included is a creative strategy game where you build an underground colony for survivors of a spaceship crash-landing. You need to manage everything, placement and planning for oxygen distribution, energy, plumbing and living arrangements. It offers a demanding and strategic experience where your every action has a consequence yet still allows for creativity and ingenuity to shine through.

Our accessibility examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Oxygen Not Included accessibility 15 months ago.

NotesAccessibility Notes

You can change the speed that the game runs, and can even pause time completely, giving you plenty of time to think. However, your civilians can die if they go too long without food, water, or oxygen, or if they get too hot or cold, so it's not low-pressure. there are two different difficulty options you can choose between at the start of each run, with the easier of the two giving you more time to think, reducing the pressure but not eliminating it.

There are lots of menus and interfaces, each one displaying lots of useful information. Sometimes, multiple of these can appear at once, which can become overwhelming. The text throughout the game is consistently fairly small and often low in contrast, and text can sometimes temporarily overlap, making it unreadable.

At the start, there are lots of clear objectives to complete which get you started, but these do stop in favour of player creativity later on. You can resize the user interface to make it larger and more easily readable.

The backgrounds are mostly static and aren't distracting. Some in-game elements and objects can be very small and difficult to identify. you need to be able to distinguish between different colours in order to comprehend the map that indicates oxygen levels in different parts of your base, which is important to note for colourblind players.
