Bang-On Balls: Chronicles (2023) is an action-adventure where you play a ball exploring a film studio set up for different historical eras. Play involves rolling and jumping around to explore the world and defeat enemies. It's a game that embraces whacky silly fun like Goat Simulator, only here you get to do it with four of your friends.
Each of the different periods has its own mechanics, collectable items, and enemies to dispatch. Unlike other games that take their story and progression seriously, this is a game about mucking about and having fun. You can hop around the large levels as much as you like, or find a warp to another whole era: from the Vikings to the Age of Pirates, to Feudal Japan and even the Space Race.
Each world is large and full of content to discover. Almost everything in the game is destructible which leans into the sandbox experience. Rather than attacking enemies straight on you are often better off setting up the world to collapse on them and deal more damage.
The result is a gloriously silly game that offers the kind of platforming fun of Mario or Sonic but with the aesthetic and playfulness of games like Goat Simulator.
