Play involves clearing out each area of enemies so you can collect coins, items and weapons. You control direction of movement with one stick and direction of fire with the other. As you progress through the rooms you reveal mysteries and secrets (not all of which are helpful).
Collecting artefacts has a double edge to it. Some will help you while others will also have a hinderance. In one room you may collect something that says collecting coins will now harm you, then in the next room you find five coins. Be sure to remember not to pick them up.
There are different modes to play on your own or with friends. There are arena based local multiplayer modes where you battle your friends. You can also play the campaign in local co-op. You can also pick any of the 10 different characters, which each have different benefits and shortcomings and unique abilities. You can even create your own custom characters.
Deathmatch mode where everyone's out for themselves, last beak standing wins.
One gun mode where you each start with the same randomly chosen weapon which cannot be changed for that round.
Drop Hearts mode where you drop hearts when you are hurt that you or others can collect.
Skull keeper mode where you try and grab and keep the golden skull to win.
Hunting mode where each player starts with a spear but once thrown others can grab it.
