Heck Deck (2022) is a shooting action game where all the bullets are cards and time only progresses when you move. You direct your ghost to selectively collect the cards that grant attacks, however, they also cause you damage so careful risk-reward consideration is crucial. It stands out for making a bullet-hell dodging game more tactical with its pausing time and card-based attacks.
You work through five different stages, to take down a series of enemy bosses. It's an unusual shooting game that challenges your precision, dexterity and forward planning as much as your reflexes. The cards do you damage and act like bullets, but collecting them puts them in your deck to grant new attacks.
As you progress you learn which of the cards are worth the hit to your energy and which are not. There are dozens of different attacks and using the right one for each of the 30 enemies is key. The result is a game that is both knife-edge and thrilling but also allows you to take your time.
