Play OverviewPlay Overview

Brotato (2023) is a shooting game where you play a potato crashlanded on an alien planet. Play involves picking the right auto-firing weapons to disperse the onslaught of enemies. It takes the Vampire Survivor survival challenge in a fun silly direction, while also adding multiple weapons and silly items.

Brotato stands out from similar twin-stick survival games because of the huge amount of options available to build your character. Like those other games, you control the movement with one stick and the aiming with the other. But because you pick six weapons for each run, the combination of firepower and abilities is really important to get right. Or you can sacrifice your weapon slots with two identical weapons that are then combined for a level boost.

As you progress you discover how the different weapons upgrade during a run. This doesn't just make them more powerful but also affects their bonus abilities too. For example, an upgrade may add extra fire damage, additional luck, more experience or even additional turrets.

The result is a shooting game that is as much about your upgrade and equipment decisions as it is about aiming and moving.

Our examiner, Ellen Robertson, first checked Brotato 10 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 2 weeks ago.

Rated PEGI 7 for mild violence. Gameplay is frantic and players use various weapons, from shotguns and pistols to sticks and wands, against fantasy characters. Violence is unrealistic and cartoon-like, with enemies flashing when hit and mild blood spatter appearing when enemies are defeated. One of the upgrades players can acquire is called ‘Eyes Surgery’ and depicts a bloodied knife and some dangling eyeballs. Another upgrade shows a bloody but cartoony scar.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. You need fast reactions and to be able to think ahead to ensure you don't get cornered. Making careful decisions about upgrades and coming up with imaginative combinations of weapons is also part of the fun.
