Play OverviewPlay Overview

Chants of Sennaar (2023) is a traversal and translation puzzle where you play a traveller called to reunite the People of the Tower who are unable to communicate with each other. Play involves exploring the cell-shaded world to decipher the glyph-based puzzles and build your knowledge of its language. In this way, it gets you to slowly translate these unfamiliar letters and put them together to understand how to help the people you meet.

Divided since the dawn of time, the People of the Tower no longer speak to each other. But it is said that one day, a traveller will find the wisdom to break down the walls and restore balance. Inspired by the story of the Tower of Babel, it's a game about observation, listening, and deciphering ancient languages.

You move around the world and work with the glyphs you find to solve puzzles that let you progress. As you do, you make notes about what you think each letter means. In turn, this opens the door to communicating with the locals who need help - once you can understand what they are asking.

The result is a streamlined challenge where observation and translation are as important as quick thinking or fast reactions. By the end, you have not only travelled the endless steps of the prodigious labyrinth but uncovered an ominous truth about a fascinating universe where ancient languages are both the lock and the key.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for Fear, Mild Violence, Implied Violence. This game contains implied violence to humanoid characters. During certain sections where players must hide or run from guards or monsters, they can get caught. Here, the screen quickly fades to black but it is implied that the protagonist is harmed. Players then re-spawn at an earlier checkpoint. At one point in the game, the player is electrocuted and this is the only time where it is visible how the protagonist is hit. He arches his back when zapped, then the screen goes black and the character is seen lying on the ground. There’s no audible expression of pain, nor is there a visible injury. The game contains some characters, most significantly a monster that frequently chases the player while ominous music plays, that may be scary to young children. There is minor reference to alcohol in this game. Some seemingly drunk characters are seen in the Gardens level. Use of alcohol is not explicit, though, and players can not partake.

Skill Level

9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need good attention to detail and a systematic approach to problem-solving. Players need to get around the world and make connections between the language and the symbols they find.
