Play OverviewPlay Overview

Common'hood (2022) is a squatter simulator where you craft the means to survive in an abandoned factory. You work to create a thriving community by growing food, constructing shelters, workshops, and eventually high-tech manufacturing. It stands out for the highly detailed and flexible tools to build your world, and how this gives rise to all sorts of emergent play.

Beyond the dilapidated future setting, Commonhood is a community-building and economy management game with highly flexible base-building tools. You Scavenge for materials, grow your own food, research new technology, craft new tools, build a home, and make friends.

It's more than just architecture and technology though. Your community members each have needs and aspirations. You work with them not only to address their physical needs but to enable them to become a key member of your wholesome community. The things you create can be shared online through the in-game database. Do this well and you can earn a reputation for contributing to the design of the parts that other players use.

As you advance further you can set up a large range of building stations to automate your processes. Once the robots start doing the hard work, you have more time to consider how best things should develop and grow. Case in point is the development of a self-sustaining food supply out of a variety of crops, regaining food autonomy (and cooking recipes) in the process.

The result is a game that combines Sim City building with The Sims life simulation. But more than this you can set up self-sustaining systems that aim to be in balance rather than dominate the surrounding world and its resources. Themes like environmentalism, human needs and food stability are all present but not pushed in your face.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

We spoke to the GRA about the much lower PEGI age rating compared to ESRB. “It appears that higher ratings have been triggered elsewhere due to references to drugs and use of alcohol. However, the PEGI 16 criteria for drugs and alcohol are only triggered if there are ‘depictions of the use of illegal drugs’ or ‘prominent use of alcohol’ (meaning it must be an active and prominent part of gameplay, where the player actively chooses to use the product).”
