Play OverviewPlay Overview

Curious Expedition (2015) is an expedition simulation, in the late 19th century. You join historical people to explore a world map to gain fame, science and treasures. You recruit explorers and equip them for what they may face, then set out on your next expedition. Each time you set out the world is different, with unique challenges requiring particular equipment.

On each adventure, you must carefully manage your resources to stay alive and choose which heavy treasure you want to take back home. As you explore you interact with natives, trade with villages and communicated with lost civilizations. You can decide to loot the temple but must deal with traps. When eventually you come a cropper you start again from your home port, but if you don't get home you lose anything you find.

Each of the explorers you have in your party has different abilities both in combat and other interactions. They also affect your carrying capacity which determines how much treasure you can take home. The characters are affected permanently on expeditions, sometimes even dying or turning on you and stealing your treasure.

Although it's not an educational game you can play with a wide range of historical figures including Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, Richard Francis Burton, Johan Huizinga, Mary Kingsley, Amelia Earhart, Nikola Tesla, Alexandra David-Neel, Marcus Garvey, Dion Fortune, Frederick Courtney Selous, Freya Stark, H. P. Lovecraft, Isabella Bird, Harriet Tubman, Ada Lovelace and Grigori Rasputin.
  • Curious Expedition is on PC, Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Curious Expedition Rivals is a multiplayer expansion of the game, coming soon to PC and consoles.
  • Curious Expedition 2 is an enhanced version of the game with new abilities and adventures, coming soon to PC and consoles.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for mild violence. It features non-realistic-looking violence towards characters which although human are not very detailed and violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures. Violence consists of turn-based battle scenes where players use dice to determine their course of action. Non-detailed, pixelated human and animal characters are not depicted as physically attacking each other, remaining rooted to their spot on the battlefield. They shudder to indicate they’ve been hit and display a reduction in their life bars and number damage. Blood splashes are shown but these fade away almost immediately. The game contains menu options including whiskey and coca leaves which the player uses to regain sanity. As this game is predominantly text-based, the player is never visually depicted consuming these items.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need to be able to deal with lots of reading and use imagination to interpret the simple visuals. There are layered systems that need to be managed, both in terms of the combination of explorers you take but also how you handle them and their interactions out on the road. You need to be willing to try out different combinations and learn from the consequences. Although sometimes when you get it wrong some characters are lost for good.
