Play Overview
DataJack 2020 is a stealth action game where you play a mercenary in the dystopian underworld of the East Coast Hub. Drawing inspiration from cyber-hacking role-play of games like Shadowrun and Syndicate, you take contracts to steal data by hacking defences, picking locks, hotwiring tech, defeating guards or blowing a new entrance with explosives. It stands out for the depth of simulation and destructible environments that enable inventive ways to complete each mission.
As an underworld mercenary, your clients are the global megacorporations and crime syndicates that seized power following the collapse of the world order. They want you to conduct sabotage, assassinations, infiltration and espionage. To do this you must explore the world and choose how to survive, make money and who to help.
As you progress you learn to use the fully destructible world, the people in it and your particular abilities to hack and stealth your way to your goal. This can be as direct or indirect as you like. Each mission starts with you hatching a plan in and (hopefully) out using schematics of your target. Then it's time to execute with enough flex to cope with the curve balls each scenario throws at you.
You steadily work your way through the ranks from jacked-up street punk to a wealthy and sought-after fixer. This leads to lots of ways you can upgrade your abilities with cybernetic limbs, implants, improved software, a vast array of weapons, and a range of hacker tools. You can even learn how the computer characters track you by sight and sound, radio for backup or get distracted. Talk your way out of confrontations by leveraging information, using your social engineering skills, or with items like fake IDs.
The result is a cyber-punk-style game that is open and inviting. It's built around systems that simulate the world, people and technology in a way that you can take advantage of. No two missions are the same, because everything is unfolding in response to what you are doing.
