Play Overview
Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine (2013) is a heist simulation game. You control a crew of robbers who escape from jail and take on a series of increasingly complex robberies. The novelty is the simple top-down view of proceedings that allow for complex strategies using different characters abilities. Plans and outcomes emerge as different elements interact in each dynamic setting.
Play involves exploring each location to collect coins and achieve objectives. On your own or with other players you work through the missions. As you do you unlock the different characters. This includes the Locksmith who can get through doors, the Lookout who has great vision and hearing, the mole who can create tunnels.
In single player, death ends your run. You choose a new character and then carry on from where you set off. In cooperative play, you need to complete the missions in one go, with carefully selected combinations of characters.
Things take off as the challenge ramps up. You have to use every last ability and aspect of the environment. The fog of war feature means you can only see what your characters have line of sight for. You hide round corners, jump into bushes, use sleeping darts or maybe murder a security guard with a gun you've collected.
The result is an Ocean's Eleven style jaunt. Here, like that film, you need a strong plan that you can then adjust as events unfold. It's fun on your own and chaotic with other people. The real joy is executing a plan on the umpteenth go and finally seeing everything run like clockwork.
