En Garde (2023) is a swashbuckling fighting game where the focus is on the poise and grace of fencing. You use your foil to parry, riposte and lunge through a world of enemies. From the forgotten pages of history, you help Adalia de Volador in her daring adventures in hand-painted locations. You take on an array of charismatic (and outspoken) characters who offer as much banter as battling. As you progress you learn to push your cunning and acrobatics to the limit. You learn each enemy's weaknesses to ensure you work them into a corner and gain the upper hand. Each location is a playground full of opportunities to surprise, stun, or evade enemies with a variety of objects, from rolling barrels to falling chandeliers.

You use swords to slash, stab and push your enemies. Your character flinches when struck but there is no blood. Enemies collapse to the floor and remain there when they have been injured. Enemies can also be blown away by explosions, crushed under things, fall down stairs, or have things stuck on their heads. But it is always represented in a cartoony light-hearted way. There are these comical injuries but no one ever actually dies, not even the big bad guys.
Skill Level
9+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need to have a good sense of timing and respond to the on-screen tells quickly. Prioritising the different enemies when you are outnumbered is also an important skill.
