Play Overview
Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) is an action role-playing game set in a decaying cyberpunk metropolis, and the first in a series of games that remake the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII. You play Cloud Strife, who joins an eco-terrorist group aiming to bring down a corporation that is using the planet's energy for profit. It stands out for the way it expands upon the original to enable a greater depth to its storytelling and for the dramatic real-time combat.
You play mercenary and former soldier Cloud Strife, who joins a group of rebels attempting to bring down the Shinra Corporation before it destroys the world. Initially only in it for the money, as you play, you interact with the different members of your team and learn of their seasons for fighting, gradually becoming more involved and committed to the cause. You traverse the decaying and dark city of Midgar, where the Shinra Corporation has a large presence, working to fight back wherever and however you can.
In the game, you take on real-time action with strategic and role-playing elements, growing stronger over time and investing in the actions and characters you find most useful. This is updated from the original turn-based combat, while aiming to still be true to that game’s intent. By splitting the game into parts, the developer aims to give players more substantial access to areas in the game that were previously inaccessible, from deeper characterisation of your party members to a more grounded and lived-in explorable world.
The result is a chance to visit a classic game world and dig deeper, not just visually but in the narrative and environment. Connect with unforgettable characters, engage in incredible battles, and experience a story that captivated a generation.

Age Ratings
Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Language, Suggestive Themes, Tobacco, Use of Alcohol, Violence and Blood. Characters use swords, staffs, guns, and magic spells to battle fantastical monsters and human soldiers; combat is highlighted by cries of pain, impact sounds, and explosions. Cutscenes also depict instances of violence: characters impaled by swords (off-camera); a man shot repeatedly while on a stairwell. Some female characters wear revealing outfits (e.g., deep cleavage); one scene depicts a man ogling women's bodies while making suggestive hand gestures and hip movements. The game contains some alcohol content: ordering “something hard and bitter” and watching a character drink; searching for a person at the “Drunkards' Den”; watching characters drunk and slurring their speech. One cutscene depicts a character smoking a cigar. The words “sh*t,” “a*shole,” and “pr*ck” appear in the dialogue.
In addition to the official rating, parents should note implied sexual violence in some scenes. At one point in the female game characters are sent into a room of men with implications that this is for sexual purposes.
