Play OverviewPlay Overview

Five Nights at Freddy's (2014) (FNaF) is a point-and-click survival game where you defend yourself against killer robots. Unable to move, you check cameras and close the security doors when they get close while conserving power. It may just look like spooky jump scares, but there's surprising depth to learning the robots' movements through the building and balancing the safety of closing your doors with the risk of running out of power before the night ends.

You play a nightguard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a restaurant with Chuck E. Cheese-style animatronic animal mascots as the main attraction. There's Freddy the bear, Chica the chicken, Bonnie the bunny, and Foxy the fox, as well as the elusive Golden Freddy. When you arrive for your first shift, you learn that they try and break into your office and kill you, and must use the limited resources at your disposal to fend them off.

Play involves surviving from 12 AM to 6 AM (about 9 minutes) while the animatronics patrol the building. You cannot move around, and use your computer to check the cameras and keep track of their movements. When they get close, you must close the appropriate door to your office until they leave again. However, every action you take consumes your limited supply of power, and you must balance staying safe with ensuring you don't run out before your shift is over.

As you progress through the nights, the animatronics get more aggressive, and differences in their behaviours begin to emerge. You must learn to understand their patterns intuitively and rely on subtle audio cues to tell you what to do without using the cameras. If you get through all the main nights, you unlock an additional challenge where you can set the aggression of each of the animatronics separately for the ultimate challenge.

The result is a game that, in addition to a spooky horror atmosphere, contains a nuanced challenge of resource conservation and learning the specifics of each robot's behaviour. Gradually finding the balance of safety and power preservation as you make it through the week is extremely rewarding, as well as tense.

Play Time: This game will take between 1 and a half hours and 4 hours to complete. While each night is approximately 9 minutes long, as you die often (especially in the later nights), the time to beat is longer than expected, and varies based on how often you fail. The extra custom night where you choose the difficulty of each robot can significantly extend play time as well.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Horror and Fear. The overall atmosphere of the game is creepy and unnerving. Sinister laughs and footsteps can be heard making their way towards the player as the nights progress. The animatronic creatures which stalk you have disturbing designs meant to intimidate. The characters only move locations when they are not being looked, and can only be tracked using the CCTV cameras. If the player fails to stop the oncoming animatronics or runs out of power, then they will be caught by one of the animatronics. In this situation a loud jumpscare where the creatures lunge at the player is triggered. The screen then cuts to black and the player is returned to the main menu.

Rated 12+ on the Apple App Store for Frequent/Intense Horror/Fear Themes and Frequent/Intense Cartoon or Fantasy Violence.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Pre-teenagers are often keen on the mild horror stories around Five Nights at Freddy's. Along with considerations about content, you do need to be able to stay on top of managing power and keeping track of the robots.
