Play Overview
You play a nightguard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a restaurant with Chuck E. Cheese-style animatronic animal mascots as the main attraction. There's Freddy the bear, Chica the chicken, Bonnie the bunny, and Foxy the fox, as well as the elusive Golden Freddy. When you arrive for your first shift, you learn that they try and break into your office and kill you, and must use the limited resources at your disposal to fend them off.
Play involves surviving from 12 AM to 6 AM (about 9 minutes) while the animatronics patrol the building. You cannot move around, and use your computer to check the cameras and keep track of their movements. When they get close, you must close the appropriate door to your office until they leave again. However, every action you take consumes your limited supply of power, and you must balance staying safe with ensuring you don't run out before your shift is over.
As you progress through the nights, the animatronics get more aggressive, and differences in their behaviours begin to emerge. You must learn to understand their patterns intuitively and rely on subtle audio cues to tell you what to do without using the cameras. If you get through all the main nights, you unlock an additional challenge where you can set the aggression of each of the animatronics separately for the ultimate challenge.
The result is a game that, in addition to a spooky horror atmosphere, contains a nuanced challenge of resource conservation and learning the specifics of each robot's behaviour. Gradually finding the balance of safety and power preservation as you make it through the week is extremely rewarding, as well as tense.
