Play Overview
Funtasia (2022) is a racing game where you play anthropomorphic animals who have jumped in goofy vehicles to fend off their world succumbing to trash. You play by accelerating or decelerating to try and get through the side-on level, using the physics of the bumps and lumps to jump gaps and hopefully not land upside-down. It stands out not only for the art and character, but the joyful exuberance of how many unexpected (and bizarre) challenges levels throw at you.
You work to save the beautiful, ecologically sustainable world of Funtasia and its furry inhabitants from tons of garbage dumped on it from space. It's simple to play but to do well takes real practice to nail the timing and balance.
Each level ripples, with hills, pits, bridges, quicksand, cliffs, and caves separating you from the finish line. To get through you need to balance acceleration, brakes, and the tilt of the car to keep trucking forwards. The final twist is that although you can slow down, you can't stop.
The result is a game filled with furry animals in a hand-drawn (Adventure Time/Troma) world. There are 40 different cars for them to master, each with different performance, challenges, and idiosyncrasies. Add to that the trash-boss enemies and the great co-operative option, and you have a great little game for families of all ages.
