Hyper Light Breaker is an action fighting game where fluid motion is used to defeat enemies in a surreal, abstract world familiar if you have played the previous Hyper Light games. You move around the world and use guns, swords, and abilities to defeat enemies. It stands out for how its mysterious story is told through the world rather than words, as well as the unique combination of fast-paced movement with exacting combat.

Set in the same post-technological, esoteric world as Hyper Light Drifter, the characters who inhabit it have no language, communicating instead through pictures. You play a Breaker who journeys into the wilderness, filled with the ruins of a long-gone society, to defeat the ominous Abyss King. To reach him, you need to fight against his minions, activate beacons, and piece together the mystery of the world.

Play involves traversing the landscape by running, jumping, using a hoverboard and paragliding, and defeating enemies. Combat is super fast, as you use your wits and reactions to use melee weapons and guns to survive. To progress further you must defeat larger enemies in one-on-one battles, unlocked by activating beacons scattered across the game's randomly-generated biomes. When you die, you start again from the beginning but get to keep some of the loot and weapons you got on the previous run, letting you get further each time.

The result is a unique game where both combat prowess and traversal skill are essential to success. Slowly gaining better gear and weapons that allow you to progress slightly further each time you play as you slowly uncover the game's mystery is a rewarding, engaging, and entertaining challenge.
