Play Overview
Kinsplant (2022) is an adventure about searching for a fabled artefact buried somewhere in one of the four realms. Play is like a retro adventure game where you move around, fight enemies and hunt for an ancient artefact. However, the twist is that it has been hidden by a previous player so you must track their footprints and clues to find and then hide the artefact yourself.
You play one of four kinsmen who must track down and unearth the artefact to bury it somewhere even more secret and safe, to prevent further prying hands. At the start, you choose your character history which determines where in the world you begin your quest and the burial ritual you receive if you fail. As you progress you discover signs of other players who have previously found and then hidden the treasure. The trick is that their footprints are only visible on certain types of terrain, and there's the ability to pay to have them erased by local people (if you have killed enough monsters). There are also witnesses in the game who point to the treasure to help those on the hunt.
The result is a game that invites curiosity and exploration. Not everything is explained at the beginning, but as you piece things together you realise what's important is not only finding the artefact but covering your tracks as you do because these will be the clues other players have to try and find it once you have hidden it somewhere. It's a lovely take on asynchronous multiplayer that has you thinking about the others who will visit the world as much as your own time in it.
