You play Kirby and run around freely in 3D stages. To battle enemies, you can use a range of basic attacks that are augmented when you inhale characters and gain new powers. As you progress through the levels you discover abandoned architecture from a current-day forgotten past.
Between the main levels, you can explore Waddle Dee Town which acts as a central hub where you can shop for customisations, play mini-games or even work at the Café. As you save more Waddle Dees the hub area develops and offers more options and things to buy.
