Play OverviewPlay Overview

Mortal Shell (2020) is a fighting role-playing video with difficult battles. It invites you to explore and fight your way through a shattered world where the remains of humanity wither and rot.

Progress is blocked by enemies that often look grotesque and always offer a difficult battle. You must learn both the right reactions and strategies of the combat to proceed. Only commit your sword when an opportunity opens. Calculate parries to unleash devastating counterblows.

Like the Demon's Souls and Dark Souls games, the enjoyment here is taking on a hugely difficult task and persevering when you inevitably die and lose substantial progress.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Mortal Shell 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 5 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for drugs and violence. The level of violence varies, from moderate sword play with little in the way of physical responses, to more realistic scenes in which characters are beaten, slashed, impaled and caught in traps. There is sight of blood although little injury detail to human characters. More graphic injury detail does occur when demonic creatures are involved. For example, one enemy rips off its own head to use as a weapon, leaving a bloody stump, and others explode upon defeat. The player is also able to rip organs from the bodies of certain enemies, sometimes accompanied by large showers of blood. The player is prominently shown consuming a bottle of 'moonshine' in order to gain an increase in resolve, albeit at the expense of their own health.
