Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas (2013) (simply called Oceanhorn on iOS and Android) is an adventure game that brings Zelda-style exploration, battling and dungeon-solving to non-Nintendo platforms. You play as a boy on a quest to find his lost father while exploring dungeons, fighting monsters, and uncovering secrets. It stands out for the combination of these elements with a heartfelt story of adventure and whimsy.

You play a young unnamed boy who sets out on an adventure across the ocean in a daring attempt to save his father and defeat the Oceanhorn, a huge living fortress holding him captive. Along the way, you fight offer enemies with different weapons and items you find, solve puzzles to unlock the way forward, and explore dark dungeons filled with secrets and hidden paths. You can cut grass and throw pots to find hidden hearts and coins that allow you to build up your strength and gain experience, letting you take on more powerful foes.

The result is a game that pays homage to older, top-down Zelda games and the sailing from Wind Waker, while still adding its own unique twists like an experience system and a 3D world, making for a nostalgic yet still novel experience.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures. The game features a lot of fantasy characters (blobs, skeletons, orcs, etc.). When these enemies are defeated, they disappear and leave items behind that your character can collect. There are no injuries shown during battle, just a diminishing health bar. When your own character (human) is hit, he flinches back. No apparent harm is done. When he is defeated, he falls on the floor to be resurrected at a save point. Again, without any injuries. The bosses in the game can be scary. There are a variety of large monsters that feature classic fearful elements. A plant monster with many eyes and rows of razor teeth, a cursed aquatic king and a dark knight with a skull face.

Rated 9+ on the Apple App Store for Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence and Infrequent/Mild Horror/Fear Themes.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. This is easier than a full 3D adventure. You still need care and timing over attacks. Younger players need the resilience to keep trying when they seem to be stuck. Laterally thinking is useful for some puzzles.
