Play Overview
Oceanhorn: Chronos Dungeon (2021) is an action-fighting game where you battle floors of enemies through ancient towers to save the world. You switch between four heroes, each with randomly assigned skills and abilities, and use the weapons you find to defeat monsters and steal their loot. It stands out for its fast-paced, try-til-you-die-then-try-again ethos that incrementally hints at a mystery that connects it to the other Oceanhorn games.
Set 200 years after Oceanhorn 2 and about 800 years before the first game, you play a band of adventurers on a mission to restore the land of Arcadia to its former glory. You search the Chronos Dungeon for the Paradigm Hourglass, a relic so powerful that it can alter the course of history. As you traverse the dungeon, you fight off enemies, talk to the characters you meet, and grow in strength.
Play involves moving through the floors of the dungeon and using your weapons to defeat monsters that block your way down further. You can switch between four different heroes which, in addition to having unique weapons and strengths, each have a randomly assigned trait, such as being able to avoid traps or gain more loot. When you die, you are sent back to the hub town, where you can talk to characters, find secrets, and upgrade your characters and weapons to make it further in your next attempt.
The result is a game that takes the Oceanhorn games in a unique direction, with an emphasis on fast-paced, roguelike, dungeon-crawling combat, that still ties into the overall narrative and expands the story and world.
