Minecraft Dungeons (2020) is an action-adventure game that takes place in the Minecraft universe. You explore various dungeons to complete missions and collect new gear by exploring and finding treasure chests, or by defeating enemies. It stands out for combining the Minecraft world with a more exuberant and challenging action-oriented experience.

It offers a cooperative experience for up to four players. The variety in gear enables players to each have a unique purpose within the group. One player may be good at defeating enemies quickly, while another player can make the enemies weaker. When each person has a role within the group it encourages sharing gear so that the team may be the best it can be.

As you progress you advance your party. The gear you collect along the way can be used to defeat enemies who are stronger and take on the more challenging dungeons. This in turn rewards you with even better equipment.

The result is a game that focuses on brawling button-mashing combat but with an eye on strategy and cooperation. In a family, it's a great game to play together as you work through the hoards of enemies and steal their treasure.

Rated PEGI 7 for non-realistic violence in a child-friendly setting or context, non-realistic looking violence towards characters which, although human, are not very detailed, and violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical beings and creatures. Violence consists of your pixelated human-like characters fighting off enemies, such as skeletons, spiders and zombies, with your crafted weapons, causing them to break up into squares before they disappear. Realistic human responses, blood or injuries are not shown in the Minecraft Universe. However, the dungeon settings are often dark and gloomy places inhabited by giant and scary monsters that younger players may find disturbing.
 
Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The familiar Minecraft world is a good way for younger children to step into this more action-oriented and linear adventure. There is depth here for them as they get more adept and ambitious and actually, not having to deal with an open world makes this work quite well for very younger players if they have an adult playing alongside.

Account Rating

Account required for online play that has 13 years old as minimum age. In addition to an account to access online play, Minecraft Dungeons requires an Xbox Live or Microsoft account to play with friends even if you're not playing on Xbox or PC. For players under 13, this requires a parent or guardian to provide consent to create the account.
 
  • You need be 18-years-old to to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold for online play, but can then configure family accounts for younger players to play online with Xbox One.
