Pit People (2018) is a tactical strategy game where you herd a menagerie of medieval soldiers to take on all manner of strange foes. Play is about moving your characters tactically so they can maximise their attacks while staying out of range of counters.
The story is that an angry space bear kidnaps your son and you need to fight to get him back. Although it's turn-based, the amount of action on the screen, the madcap music, and the sheer bizarre nature of both the enemy and your units make it feel fast-paced. This is mixed up with different types of missions (some stealth quests don't involve combat at all for example) and multiple ways of succeeding.
As you progress you discover that this can't be boiled down to repeatable strategic decisions like other tactics games. There is the same rock-paper-scissors aspect where certain types of units have an advantage or disadvantage over others however, things are more chaotic here as you don't have total control of your units. You can tell them roughly where to go and who to attack but it's up to them how they execute. You find yourself balancing just how much rope you give them to have the best chance of winning - or for them to strangle themselves with bad decisions.
The result is a game about managing the chaos of battle rather than strict control and execution of premeditated plans. It's a weird game both in how it looks and how it plays, and this works well as a breath of fresh air in the sometimes tired tactical strategy war games.
