Play OverviewPlay Overview

Poppy Playtime (2021) is a horror puzzle adventure game where you are pursued by vengeful toys in an abandoned factory. Amidst the disturbing music and jump scares you hack electrical circuits and collect useful items. Along with the unusual horror setting, your two extendable arms create novel interactions and extend the horrific clown aesthetic. The level of horror and violence varies significantly for each of the separately downloadable chapters.

You used to work at the toy factory and return a decode later after the staff seemingly disappeared. Play involves exploring each area and using your extendable hands to find clues, make electrical connections and solve the mystery. As you do this though, you are hunted by Huggy Wuggy, Cat-Bee, Mommy Long Legs and Poppy Playtime toys.

There is controversy around the game similar to the Momo Challenge moral panic. Because of the popularity of the game TikTok and YouTube creators have made scary fan videos about the Huggy Wuggy with lyrics that include "hug until your last breath together" and "sink my teeth in and you're consumed". This was misconstrued as being an encouragement to harmful actions in the game and led to warnings from head teachers and Police. While the game content is edgy, it's rated suitable for 12-13 year olds and doesn't include any encouragements for self harm.

The game is released in chapters, each of which have different levels of violence and often vary in age rating:
  • Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 (2021)
  • Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 (2022)

It's a game about the thrill of dread. Drawing on games like Five Nights at Freddies and films like Child’s Play, it creates terrifying monsters from innocent playthings. Huggy Wuggy, for instance starts looking like a 10 foot tall cuddly toy but soon reveals its sharp teeth. The challenge is solving the obscure puzzles, often with the help of the wider player community.

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for Horror and Strong Violence. Graphic violence to fantasy characters and scenes of intense and sustained horror. The player is chased, throughout the game, by several sinister characters with sharp teeth and claws, which threaten to kill the player's character. There is sight of blood and gore, most notably when a character is crushed to death in a grinder and when a player is immolated and impaled through their head. The games also include use of bad language, including 'p*!s', 'b%$@*y' and 'a!%e'.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Blood, Mild Language, Violence. Players investigate an abandoned toy factory, solve puzzles, watch surveillance footage, and flee from monstrous toys. As players use robotic arms to interact with the environment, they can be surprised by dramatic jump scares. Monsters/toys are killed by various means: a monster crushed under a falling gate; a toy caught in a grinding machine, screaming while slowly crushed; a toy electrocuted, resulting in toxic gas and burning. Blood-splatter effects accompany monster/toy deaths, and several environments are stained/splattered with blood. Some black-and-white surveillance footage depicts human characters killed by toys, with corpses strewn on the ground. The words “p*ssed off” appear in the game.
Rated 12+ on Apple App Store for Infrequent/Mild Mature/Suggestive Themes, Mild Realistic Violence, Intense Horror/Fear Themes, Cartoon or Fantasy Violence, Profanity or Crude Humor.

Chapter 1: There's no gore but there are some splatters of blood on factory walls. As highlighted by official ratings, the horror nature of the game makes it likely to upset younger players.

Chapter 2: There's a scene where a character is pulled into a meat grinder and then explodes with a splash of blood.

Parents should also note that copy-cat games are available on Roblox, such as Poppy Playtime Morphs. Because these are user generated experiences they fall outside any rating criteria.
