Play OverviewPlay Overview

Prince of Persia (1989) is a long-standing game series dating back to the early 90s. The games all feature the titular prince who must escape a maze of platform-based levels. The game first impressed with its unusually fluid movement and life-like animation. This focus on climbing and realistic interaction with the architecture of each level continued throughout the series.

The original trilogy:
  • Prince of Persia (1989)
  • The Shadow and the Flame (1993)
  • Prince of Persia 3D (1999)

The Sands of Time series:
  • The Sands of Time (2003)
  • Warrior Within (2004)
  • The Two Thrones (2005)

This more recent trilogy was played in the third-person and revolved around your running, jumping and climbing abilities. There were also encounters with enemies played out as fights. The novel aspect of the game was being able to rewind time if the Prince made a mistake or to freeze enemies.

Prince of Persia has had a range of other games in the series since then, most notably a reboot of the idea in 2008 where he relied on a female companion to progress.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Prince of Persia 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 3 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is rated PEGI 12. Violence in the game is non-realistic in nature. Characters can be staggered by attacks, however, there is no blood or injury shown. When the player is hit, a red border appears around the screen to indicate that damage is being dealt.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is rated PEGI 16 for depictions of realistic-looking violence towards human-like characters and depictions of erotic nudity. Blood appears when characters are impacted and splatters onto the nearby environment. Characters let out grunts of pain and stagger backwards when attacked. When they have been defeated, their bodies limply fall to the floor and remain there, without visible injuries. The strongest examples of violence are found in the game's cut scenes. A battle sequence early in the game shows multiple humans being knocked to the floor, stabbed and slashed at. The game also contains infrequent depictions of erotic nudity. The most notable scene involves a man and a woman bathing together in a bathhouse. Both are naked, although genitals and female nipples are obscured from view. The scene progresses to the man and woman lying down whilst touching and kissing each other. The screen then fades to black. Sexual intercourse is implied to have occurred but is not depicted.
