Video Game Shoulders of Giants Review
Shoulders of Giants (2023) is a shooting game where you control a sword-wielding robot and the gunslinging space frog that is piloting it. Although it mixes things up letting you switch between two characters, it keeps play approachable in its straightforward battles. It stands out for the unusual characters, but also the surprisingly deep (and wacky) customisations you can select before each mission.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Shoulders of Giants 14 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 3 months ago.

Play OverviewPlay Overview

Shoulders of Giants is a shooting game where you control a sword-wielding robot and the gunslinging space frog that is piloting it. Although it mixes things up letting you switch between two characters, it keeps play approachable in its straightforward battles. It stands out for the unusual characters, but also the surprisingly deep (and wacky) customisations you can select before each mission.

Play involves working alone or in a team to restore health and life to your corrupted planet. You explore each area to destroy the enemy machines and take over control points. To do this you need to find abilities and weapons that help you develop your character both during and between levels: grappling hooks, speed bursts, glowing grenades, and a futuristic trash van you can ride.

The result is an approachable shooting and brawling game. It's a great fit for expert and novice players to team up. But also, the two characters create an inviting way to dip your toe into the genre.
