Play OverviewPlay Overview

Spelunky 2 (2020) is, like the classic Spelunky, a running and jumping game where you explore mysterious caves on the moon looking for your missing parents. On your journey, you will find unique environments, treasure, and people to join you as you delve deeper into the caves.

Spelunky 2 is structured around rounds of play, meaning you're expected to fail, start over, and try again many times. The world is filled with many traps, enemies, and challenges that can quickly lead to a game over. While this may sound frustrating the main idea is to learn from your mistakes and to be comfortable trying new strategies. It's less about your character becoming better and more about how you improve as a player.

Part of improving as a player is understanding what can help you along your journey. Spelunky 2 has a vast variety of items that can assist you in each round. Some items such as rope can help you navigate levels easier, while other items such as the camera can be used to blind enemies and slow them down. With each attempt, you'll begin to discover what items are needed to help you succeed and what you can do to obtain them.

Spelunky 2 is a direct sequel to the first game: Spelunky. Despite the game being a sequel, you can jump into Spelunky 2 without missing anything.

Our examiner, Jonah Monaghan, first checked Spelunky 2 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 9 months ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for mild violence. The game originally received a 16 based on the original (IARC) declaration from the developer. However, the game was subsequently reviewed by PEGI and re-rated at PEGI 7. "While there is a dice rolling game, this did not meet the criteria for simulated gambling, given that there is no instructional detail that teaches about gambling, beyond simply rolling dice and no glamorisation."
Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Skill Level

11+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Although younger players are attracted to the cartoon visuals and simple premice, it's those that grasp the game's interwoven systems that get the most from Spelunky. Reactions and forward-thinking is important, but also systematic thinking and cunning.
