Play OverviewPlay Overview

Spiritfarer is a boat-building exploration game. Unusually though, you play Stella, ferry master to the deceased and the boat you manage takes them to the next life.

Build a boat to explore the world, then befriend and care for characters that join your voyages before finally releasing them into the afterlife. As the sun rises and sets and the weather blows in, you do all the usual humdrum stuff: farm, mine, fish, harvest, cook, and craft. You also explore the locations you discover by running and jumping like a platform game.

However, all this action culminates not in success or money but in a moment to say a final goodbye to each character you got to know. "I need you to help me with these last steps on my final journey." Each person you meet offers a rich story and lasting memories of their life. You have space and time to simply relax with your passengers, and create lasting connections, but, ultimately, learn how to say goodbye to your cherished friends.

This is a Narrative and Strategy game with Action, Adventure, Platform, Simulation and Traversal elements. You can play with 1 to 2 players in the same room, but you can’t play it online. A second player can help as Daffodil the cat. Two player couch co-op is supported in the story. Playing as Daffodil means you can’t talk to the spirits on the boat or activate quests, but you can do anything else. This is great for families and can speed up the management aspect of the game as well as making some missions a little easier.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Sexual Innuendo, Mild Swearing.

In the US, ESRB state: Players traverse platforms while crafting materials, building cabins for spirits, and interacting with deceased characters. Characters describe past violence and/or cause of death in detail: “As he runs towards us...we hear a very loud explosion and a big puff of smoke. A land mine...it was obvious he wouldn't make it”; “He grabs the guy, who's still hitting me with the bat...That guy has glass all over him. He's screaming repeatedly 'It's in my eyes, it's in my eyes!' Blood is coming out of his eyes...” During the course of the game, a character is frequently depicted smoking cigarettes. The words “sh*t” and “a*shole” appear in the dialogue.

Skill Level

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. Although you need planning, empathy and persistence to enjoy this game, very young players can enjoy helping a parent or guardian in the co-operative 2 player mode. We heard from one family who told us their 7-year old "vocalizes his thoughts as he plays. The way he speaks to the characters is very much the same way he speaks to his younger sister. The game does an incredible job of ingratiating him to the characters, introducing conflict with each, and then giving him ways to resolve the conflict and reconnect with them."
