Play OverviewPlay Overview

Splatoon 3 (2017) is the latest in the series of shooting games where you fire ink rather than bullets in highly skilled battles. As well as taking out opponents, teams work together to cover the arena with their coloured ink. It stands out for the less violent approach to combat and the visualisation of who is winning the most territory.

You play in Splatsville, located in the sun-scorched Splatlands, where you take on rivals in online battles. Play is like other shooting games, only here you aim to claim territory by covering it in ink in four-on-four fights. When areas are covered with your colour you can switch to your squid form to move much quicker. The battle continues until the time runs out whereupon the team that claims the most turf wins.

As you progress you can customise your outfits to show off your signature splatting style. Some of these are won, purchased or unlocked by owning the Splatoon series amiibo figurines. The result is a highly skilled and tactical combat game. Learning the different arenas and wide range of paint-based weapons is all part of the fun.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for Violence. The violence in this game is unrealistic. When the characters are hit with ink multiple times they explode into splashes of ink. The game is set in a very colourful, cartoony and therefore child-friendly setting. The only available weapons are ink blasters or paint rollers. Some of the bosses look evil but the general atmosphere of the game never gets scary. Characters use expressions like: “Oh carp!” and “This sucker’s not messing around” but no actual swearing.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it’s important for parents and guardians to ensure they understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Although the game looks perfect for super young players, you do need quite a bit of dexterity and motor skills to enjoy it. For children who have had a few years in school, this is a great game, building teamwork and paint-covering strategy. It's also a good alternative to more violent shooting games like Fortnite, but every bit as skilful and exuberant.
