Play Overview
Supraland (2018) is an adventure game that involves exploring, running, jumping, solving puzzles, and fighting monsters. You play a member of the Red Village and you must discover why the Blue Village has sabotaged your water supply. Your character is a miniature toy man in a large world based inside a child's sandbox that slowly unlocks as you beat enemies, solve puzzles, and upgrade your abilities.
Inspired by the adventure games Portal and Metroid, you walk through the world wielding your weapon, jumping, and running to defend yourself against enemies. Like those games, as you get deeper into Supraland, the puzzles get more complicated, challenging you to think outside of the box and put your varied abilities to good use. The puzzles might ask you to find a way to open a door using objects that you can pick up and drop, and use simple physics to activate mechanics or press down a button.
Supraland has secret chests to find scattered through the game in hidden locations such as behind walls and through secret passages. These chests, instead of containing a useless collectable item, contain an upgrade or ability which will help you progress through puzzles. As well as these, there are barrels that you collect and bring back to the shop where you can buy the abilities such as a force cube that you conjure from nothing and double jump. This encourages the player to explore deeper into the sandbox land and seek out the secret locations.
Supraland: Six Inches Under extends the original game once you have resolved the war between blues and reds. A new story transpires that brings you face to face with a new set of characters, this time they are grey. Like the original, but in a new setting, you solve platforming puzzles with your new magnetic ability. It has lots of hidden areas and secrets to find and is a substantial space to explore
If you haven’t played Supraland, then the great news is it’s on both PC and Xbox GamePass, so you’ve no excuse. This game is Steam-only for now (and I prefer playing it mouse-keyboard anyway), and one of the first must-buys of 2022.
