Play Overview
The Videokid (2017) is a traversal game inspired by the Paperboy arcade game and the 1980s in general. It plays like an endless runner, where you switch lanes to dodge enemies and collect coins, but at the same time, you're shooting newspapers at enemies and mailboxes to score points. It stands out for the irreverent blocky recreation of the classic game that offers a quick blast of fun and 80s references.
Like Paperboy, the challenge is to test your reaction skills in a 1980s neighbourhood filled with danger. To play you skate and grind your way through the hazards. You need to dodge the '80s bikes, cars, trucks and trains. You can also take advantage of moments when you can hitch yourself to the back of vehicles for a boost.
It's a super short game, but one that knows its audience. The cultural references come thick and fast with unlockable skins including The Joker, Teen Wolf and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As you play these throw-back characters continue with characters, sounds and items from Fraggle Rock, He-Man, Terminator, Back to the Future, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Chuckie.
The result is a short and sweet trip down memory lane that offers a considerable challenge and will make 80s kids smile.
