Play Overview
Wilderplace (2022) is a turn-based adventure puzzle game where there are shaman bringing balance to a once-idyllic Divine Garden. You play by moving around the interlocking garden mazes, solving each scenario in creative ways to discover new abilities that let you explore deeper. It stands out for its large interconnected world and cast of characters you must work with who each have a mission and priorities of their own.
You move around The Divine Garden one grid-based area at a time. Each of these is populated with artefacts and characters with their own distinct goals and behaviours. Spirits, for example, seek out the nearest creature and transform it into a new tree-home. Woodsmen chop down trees and release the Spirits. The Warden attacks intruders and Foragers harvest mushrooms to heal sick creatures.
Unlike other puzzle games, here it's not just a matter of defeating or out manoeuvring these living creatures, but working with their qualities, to influence them and set-up interactions that resolve the level and let you progress.
As you work through each area, and the characters you find in it, you discover a strong narrative about the world, its history and what needs setting right. Completing one area enables you to move to another part of the large interconnected map and creates a unique route for each play through. Along the way you also find tools and items that enable you to solve new areas, or offer an alternative solution to an area you've already visited.
The result is a puzzle game that needs more than brute force to solve. You have to work with not only the geographic set-up of each puzzle, but the other living entities in it. It takes some getting used to, and often requires subtle thinking, but the solutions you find are all the more elegant and satisfying for the unusual challenge.
