Play OverviewPlay Overview

Chuchel (2018) is a comedy adventure game where you play hairy hero Chuchel and his rival Kekel, solving simple puzzles and challenges in their quest to retrieve the precious cherry. It looks like a children's storybook animation with strange, peculiar creatures.

Play involves using the touch screen or mouse to interact with each scene. Although at first, it seems like nothing more than an interactive toy, you soon start to discover a story and characters with evolving personalities.

It's comedic and a bizarre Monty Python kind of way. You might be faced with a tree too tall to reach its fruit. You choose whether to climb or shake the tree. Getting to the fruit you realise you can't pull it off. By continuing to tap, you end up pulling the tree over. Many of these one-screen puzzles draw on classic video games, but then subvert the play -- a lot like WarioWare games.

Characters chase each other, get squished and shout. But the dark humour is accompanied by funny sounds and cartoon visuals so it's never overly scary. With hundreds of whimsical animations and stages, there's plenty to do for younger players.

Our examiner, Ellen Robertson, first checked Chuchel 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 10 weeks ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for Violence. There is a lot of violence present. However, the violence never leads to suffering or injuries. It is very slapstick-y (The character gets smashed with a hammer causing it to be flat as a stamp, a bomb explodes so all characters have black curly hair). In one level the player can choose to eat a bit of a mushroom, which will trigger a sequence in which the character is “tripping”. There are no references that the mushroom is a drug. In another level, the main characters are held in a laboratory and are given several pills, causing them to deform, to change moods and such. The right pills have to be chosen to solve the level. Here also it is not suggested that these are legit medical or illegal drugs. Lastly there is a scene in which the character presses a switch and the light goes out. When the switch is turned on again a figure of death stands next to the character. He will turn the switch on and off several times only to discover that more deaths will appear. This slightly creepy scene will quickly become comical, when the figures of death begin to laugh at the players character for looking funny.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB EVERYONE for Mild fantasy violence.
